NISM Series VIII, the Equity Derivatives Certification Examination, is the certification SEBI requires for approved users and sales personnel of trading members in the equity derivatives segment of a recognised stock exchange. If you work on a derivatives dealing desk, place orders on behalf of clients, or handle risk on an equity derivatives book, this is the paper that lets you do the job legally.
The exam runs 100 multiple choice questions in 2 hours, each worth 1 mark, with negative marking of 25 percent of the marks assigned to a question. The pass mark is 60 percent and the certificate is valid for three years. The negative marking is what catches most candidates out, because guessing on a paper this size can pull a borderline score below the line.
The syllabus is heavier on mechanics than on theory. It covers the basics of the Indian derivatives market, an understanding of the index, futures and options contracts and their payoffs, strategies built from those contracts, trading systems and order types, clearing and settlement including the role of the clearing corporation, the legal and regulatory environment set by SEBI, accounting and taxation of derivatives transactions, and the sales practices and codes of conduct expected of a registered person.
