Most FRM Part 1 candidates don’t fail because they’re not smart enough.
They fail because they ran out of time, studied the wrong things, or had no plan at all.
Here is the 250-hour study plan that actually works:
Phase 1 — Foundation (Months 1–2)
Target: 80–100 hours
Cover Foundations of Risk Management and Quantitative Analysis first — these underpin everything else. Don’t skip the math. Quant feels hard early but pays off in every other topic. End goal: understand the why behind risk concepts, not just the formulas.
Phase 2 — Core Topics (Months 3–4)
Target: 100–120 hours
Cover Financial Markets & Products and Valuation & Risk Models. These two topics carry the most exam weight in Part 1. Do topic-wise mock questions as you go — not just at the end.
Phase 3 — Mock & Refine (Months 5–6)
Target: 40–50 hours
Score 65%+ on third-party mocks before attempting GARP official mocks. Target 70%+ on GARP mocks before exam day. Use your report card to identify weak areas — go back and drill those topics only.
On Exam Day
The FRM Part 1 is 100 questions in 4 hours. Triage pass first (2.5 hrs) → calculation pass (1 hr) → review (30 min). Never spend more than 2.4 minutes on a single question.
The candidates who pass first time aren’t the ones who studied the most hours. They’re the ones who studied the right hours.
